One of the more interesting developments with Windows Server 2008 R2 is the 64 bit only decision on the part of Microsoft.   For many companies that won’t be an issue as most name brand server hardware providers have only supplied 64 bit processors for the past 2 years and many older systems support 64 bit processing.   However should a company want to have only Windows 2008 Server R2 on all of their equipment and they have some older servers it will be time for them to replace those systems.

I have been implementing 2008 server for new server installs and while it is extremely different than 2003 for many of the set up features particularly if you run Exchange 2007, it seems to be a well developed OS.  It doesn’t seem to have many of the same failures of Vista even though they share the same code.

Some of the key new features in R2 are Hyper-V 2.0, Second Level Translation (SLAT), improved Terminal Services/Remote desktop, PowerShell 2.0 still no integrated GUI, Direct Access, better power management, and Branchoffice Cache.
