The slowest component on a laptop is typically the hard drive. My laptop is two years old but I replaced the original hard drive about 6 months ago with very fast drive. It now outperforms brand new laptops. Are solid state drives (SSD) ready for prime time? Some say yes, some say no but they certainly do show promise. Considering a new laptop typically costs about $2,000-$3,000 once you buy a spare power supply, battery and an accidental damage warranty, upgrading the hard drive for another $100 seems like a very good investment.
