Mitsubishi Laser Television Gets Updated Review

October 19, 2008

The Mitsubishi LaserVue was recently given an updated review with a comparison to a Pioneer Kuro.mitsubishilaservuevspioneerkuro.jpg

The Kuro, one of the best Plasmas on the market considered by many the display to beat for standard home theatre aficionados, is a PRO-151FD 60" screen.   The Mitsubishi Laser is a 65" screen, which as you probably know, the larger the screen, the more challenging it is to make look good.   Most 25" TVs look somewhat similar in quality no matter how much you pay but when you exceed 45" the better televisions start to exhibit their qualities.   A 60" to 65" inch TV should still give the advantage to the 60" for picture quality.   The Pioneer still has darker darks, and some would argue deeper colors.   The LaserVue however seemed to show off more detail and perform slightly better in the action scenes.

Some, however, would question how well each TV was tuned/tweaked.   No matter what HDTV you buy for the office or home, you would do well to spend an hour or so tweaking it to improve the picture quality.  You can pay a "professional" to tweak your TV but chances are most will simply run through an AVIA or similar set up disc.   I would highly recommend the new AVIA II set up disc for any Home Theater buff so that you can tweak your TV,  It isn't terribly challenging to do although it may take an hour or so to perform.   True professional tweakers can make significant improvements beyond the set up disc but typically aren't found at your standard electronics/kitchen appliance store.

The two major limitations of the Mitsubishi LaserVue are the depth - significantly more than plasma or LCD and the Mitsubishi reputation.   While Mitsubishi made some of the best picture rear projection CRT TVs for years, there is no denying that they knowingly sold units with defective power supplies for many years and was not willing to offer free maintenance to repair those units.   While there is no perfect set, this coming year will show some significant improvements in plasma, LCD and laser technology.
