While fast laptop hard drives are about one third of the price of solid state drives per gigabyte, solid state drives will potentially become standard within 5 years if they can get production costs down and storage capacity up.
One of the larger SSD drives available today from Intel is the X25-M 80GB Solid State Drive which sells for about $275. For about the same price you can get a Seagate 7200.3, 320 gigabyte hard drive. The SSD drive has very fast access time and has no moving parts but the Seagate Momentus drive has one of the fastest drives laptop drives available so for most things it is not far behind the SSD and offers significantly more storage.
