A Blackberry Phone That Doesn't Need Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES)

November 16, 2011

Rumor has it that Blackberry will finally release a BB device that doesn't need a desktop app running or a dedicated Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) to sync email, calendar and contacts with your phone.   BB has supported POP and IMAP in the past but this would fully sync your calendar and contacts with your MS Exchange server.   The Blackberry Colt may turn things around.

The BB Colt may be available Q1 2012. Rumor has it to expect it to touch down in February. The Colt is supposed to have decent specs (by BB standards) and run the latest BB OS which some refer to as BBX and others QNX. The big question is will it have the famous physical keyboard that BB die-hards are addicted to?

Recently BB had a significant issue with their communications equipment that put many BB users on edge as they couldn’t receive or send new emafils if they had a Blackberry Enterprise Server. Even though the BES for the user resides at their office or hosting company, those emails have to be relayed through RIM's systems to reach the end user. A significant advantage to ActiveSync is that it runs natively with your Exchange server, no dependence on a relay and no additional hardware or licensing is required.  iPhones, Android, WP7, WM all support ActiveSync, putting BB at a significant disadvantage. The one thing keeping BB afloat is their iconic layout with a small physical keyboard below the screen for easy texting. While other phone OS's may offer significant advantages, many BB users grew up with the BB phone and are reluctant go give up the physical keyboard.
